Shah honored as OVC pitcher of week

Southeast Missouri State senior pitcher Asif Shah was rewarded with the OVC pitcher of the week after a stellar performance Sunday against South Dakota State University.

Shah (1-0) threw his first complete-game shutout in the second game of a doubleheader, which Southeast won 1-0. Southeast also won the opener 7-4.

In a game scheduled for seven innings, Shah pitched eight innings and allowed just three hits. He struck out eight and didn't walk a batter. He retired 16 consecutive batters at one point.

At the plate, Shah, who also plays right field, was 4-for-6 in the three-game series.

The left-hander has a 0.84 ERA this season through 10 2/3 innings and has held opponents to a .194 batting average.

Southeast returns to action Saturday when it hosts a three-game series against Cleveland State at Capaha Field. A doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, and a single game will be played Sunday.

Women's softball

The Southeast women's softball team finished its season-opening Blues City Classic in Southaven, Miss., on Sunday with a 2-2 record.

After splitting a pair of games on Friday -- a 2-1 loss to Memphis and a 8-0 win over Alabama A&M -- tournament play was rained out on Saturday. Play resumed Sunday, with Southeast falling 3-2 to Evansville and defeating Central Arkansas 11-1 in five innings.

The Redhawks return to action this weekend in St. Louis at the All-Missouri Cancer Tournament. On Saturday, Southeast will play the University of Missouri-Kansas City at noon and Missouri State at 2 p.m.

The Redhawks will then face St. Louis University at noon Sunday before concluding with bracket play.
