SPRINGFIELD -- Notre Dame's senior girls retreated, but their underclassmen teammates held their ground.
With its senior girls at a retreat elsewhere, Notre Dame emerged from Springfield Catholic Saturday evening with a 54-51 victory.
Freshman Deana McCormick led the charge with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Jill Edwards added 10 points as Notre Dame improved to 11-12.
"We're real happy," said Notre Dame coach Jerry Grim. "This team over here is seeded first in its district. We're happy to come over here and get a win. The young girls really stepped up and played well."
Notre Dame took a 12-9 lead into the second quarter and clung to a 19-18 lead at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs nursed the one-point lead into the fourth quarter as they led 38-37 after three periods.
Perryville 88, St. Pius 66
PERRYVILLE -- Perryville coach Dean Lewis could get used to this.
The Pirates set at least three school records from the foul line Saturday in a convincing win over St. Pius.
Perryville (9-12) knocked down a school-record 27 in a row before finally missing in the second half. The Pirates ended up making 35 of 41, breaking the previous school records for most free throws made and highest percentage (85) in a game.
Perryville was 20 of 20 from the line in the first half.
Ryan Verseman paced Perryville with 23 points, followed by Michael Downen with 17.
Springfield Catholic 55, Notre Dame 52
SPRINGFIELD -- After traling 28-18 at halftime, the Bulldogs finally tied the game 50-50 with :55 left.
But Springfield Catholic's Rick Gallangher made six consecutive free throws to end the game. Springfield Catholic didn't miss any free throws in nine tries during the game.
Zach Miller led the Bulldogs (8-12) in scoring with 15 points and three 3-pointers.
Adam Obermiller added 12.
Gallangher scored 22 for Springfield Catholic.
Hillsboro 55, St. Vincent 38
HILLSBORO -- St. Vincent led 32-29 heading into the final quarter, but Hillsboro erupted to outscore the Indians 26-6 in the last eight minutes.
"We just did not execute at all in the fourth quarter," St. Vincent coach Bruce Valleroy said.
Dusty Wengert led nine players who scored for St. Vincent, which dropped to 11-6 overall and 5-4 in the Jefferson County Conference.
Girls basketball
Jackson 75, Charleston 35
JACKSON -- Jackson, the top ranked team in Missouri Class 4A, built a 16-point lead in the first quarter and cruised to victory Friday night.
The Lady Indians (18-1) led 22-6 after the opening period and took a 41-23 lead into halftime. They outscored Charleston by 16 points again in the third quarter for an overwhelming 65-31 lead.
Cherish Tillman and Laura Beck each scored 14 for Jackson and Melissa Palmer added 10 points.
Sherida Frierson scored 12 points for Charleston.
Freshmen basketball
BENTON -- Kelly's boys won their own freshman tournament Saturday with a 50-44 victory over St. Vincent in the championship game. Alan Martin scored 14 points in the victory.
Woodland defeated East Prairie 55-42 in the third-place game.
