SEMO Roundup: Southeast cross country teams sweep meet for the second time this season

The Southeast Missouri State men's and women's cross country teams remained perfect through the early part of the season.

Both squads captured their second team titles in as many meets Friday as Southeast swept the SIU Edwardsville Cross Country Challenge.

Southeast runners combined for seven top-10 finishes.

"It is very exciting to have two more first-place finishes," Southeast coach Ryan Lane said in a release. "We are running much faster now than we were this time last year."

Nate Shipley led Southeast's men, placing second with a time of 25 minutes, 29 seconds over eight kilometers.

Brent Collins was sixth (25:47), Craig Munie eighth (25:49), Tyler Mullen 10th (25:52), Ryan Anderson 18th (26:26), Shane Brown 19th (26:36) and Colten Strotheide 20th (26:40).

Other runners for the Redhawks were Tyler Holmes (24th, 26:52), Tyson Stoverink (45th, 28:31) and Sean Brown (46th, 28:40).

Rebekah Lawson paced Southeast's women with a second-place finish. Her time over five kilometers was 17:58.

Gloria Westlake (fourth, 18:51) and Jenny Govero (seventh, 19:06) each notched top-10 finishes while freshmen Lindsey Seabaugh (12th, 19:36), Laura Chavez (13th, 19:41) and Maria Trowbridge (18th, 19:49) were in the top 20.

Other Southeast runners were Madalyn Stichnot (25th, 20:05), Mary Dohogne (39th, 21:01) and Samantha Thierry (43rd, 21:45).

Stoverink and Seabaugh are Jackson High School graduates while Chavez and Dohogne are Central High School graduates.

Southeast teams return to action Saturday at the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.

Volleyball

Southeast won two of three matches over the weekend at the Butler tournament in Indianapolis, Ind.

Southeast swept Kent State 25-21, 25-21, 25-23 and UC-Davis 25-22, 25-21, 27-25 Saturday. The Redhawks opened the tournament Friday with a 25-19, 20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-11 loss to host Butler.

"I'm excited for the way we played today. We are ready to go to OVC play and take care of business," said Southeast coach Julie Folliard in a release.

The Redhawks improved to 8-6.

Redshirt freshman Taylor Masterson led Southeast against Kent State, tying a career high with 12 kills and hitting a career-high .550.

Emily Coon had 10 kills and five blocks, setter Julie Shives recorded 37 assists, and Brittney Kalinoski and Colleen Yarber each added 10 digs. Yarber also had nine kills.

Yarber paced Southeast with a career-high 19 kills against UC-Davis.

"They could not stop Colleen, she really played amazing," Folliard said.

Shives had a double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs. Berkley Idel led in digs with 19, followed by Kalinoski with 17.

Kalinoski, Yarber and Shives all posted double-doubles against Butler.

Kalinoski had 16 kills and 13 digs, Yarber had 16 kills and 14 digs, and Shives recorded 47 assists and 13 digs.

Masterson had 10 kills and five blocks. Samantha Lowman led in digs with 16. Idel added 13 digs.

Southeast, which is playing its first 16 matches away from home, opens its Ohio Valley Conference schedule Friday at Eastern Illinois.

Soccer

Southeast saw its winless streak reach five games with Friday's 5-0 loss at Memphis.

The Redhawks (1-6-2) suffered four defeats and salvaged one tie during the stretch that saw them get outscored 14-0. Four of the contests were against powerhouse programs.

Southeast has been dealt five consecutive shutouts for the first time in program history.

Memphis outshot Southeast 24-5. Ashton Aubuchon played a little more than 70 minutes in the net for the Redhawks and allowed all five goals while making six saves. Renee Kertz finished up and recorded two saves.

"The speed Memphis plays at is probably the fastest we've seen," Southeast associate head coach Paul Nelson said in a release. "From a coaching staff point of view, if we can match the pace we had to play today on both offense and defense, that will serve us well in conference play."

The Redhawks begin OVC play Friday with a 6:30 p.m. home game against Tennessee-Martin.

Southeast is the defending OVC regular-season champion while UTM won last year's OVC tournament title. The Skyhawks are the 2012 league preseason favorites, just ahead of the Redhawks.
