SEMO indoor track records broken

Southeast Missouri State track and field athletes broke two school records during Friday's season-opening indoor meet.

Southeast captured seven titles, five by the men and two by the women, at the Eastern Illinois Early Bird in Charleston, Ill.

"I was happy with the way we competed and the great efforts we had by everybody," Southeast coach Eric Crumpecker said in a release. "It was great to see us so competitive at this point in the season."

Blake Carter led the men with a pair of victories, including a school-record 6.76-second performance in the 60 meters. He won the long jump with a distance of 24 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

Other first-place finishers for the men were Curt Wood (600, 1:22.33), Kameron Long (800, 1:54.75) and Kevin Farley (shot put, 57-5 1/2).

Jackson High School graduate Blake Smith was second in the long jump (23-5 1/2) and 60 (6.87).

Craig Robinson was second in the shot put (56-5 3/4) and weight throw (61-11).

Alex Zisser recorded a second-place finish in the mile (4:18.86).

On the women's side, Jerika Lewis won the 400 (57.51) and was second in the 200 (25.67).

Rebekah Lawson won the 3,000 (10:22.67).

Notre Dame Regional High School graduate Jill Schnurbusch was second in the pole vault, (13-0 3/4), breaking her own school record.

Others finishing second for the Redhawks were Courtney Gapelu in the shot put (48-4 1/2), Ayoona Cartwright in the 60 (7.75) and Kim Moye in the triple jump (36-10 1/2).

Southeast teams return to action after the semester break with a meet at SIU Carbondale on Jan. 11.

Football

Southeast is the recipient of the 2012-13 Ohio Valley Conference Team Sportsmanship Award in football for the second time in three years.

The OVC sportsmanship awards are voted on by the student-athletes and coaches of the respective sports and bestowed upon the conference squads deemed to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. 

Southeast football went 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the OVC.

"It is an honor to win this award," Southeast coach Tony Samuel said in a release. "We feel that it is important for our team to approach the game of football with respect. Thank you to those who voted for us."
