MOREHEAD, Ken. -- Southeast Missouri State University's golf team continued its steady climb in the 15-team Morehead University Eagle Classic on Saturday, finishing the three-round tournament in third place.

Northern Kentucky captured the title with a an 879 total on the par 72 Kentucky Dam Village course. Cincinnati placed second at 886, followed by Southeast and Morehead at 885.

The Indians won the third-place tie-breaker, which was determined by the fifth man's score.

The remainder of the field: 5. Tennessee Tech 896, 6. Western Kentucky 896, 7. Illinois State 898, 8. Tennessee State 899, 9. Murray State 900, 10. Austin Peay 901, 11. University of Tennessee-Martin 904, 12. Butler 919, 13. Bellarmine 924, 14. Detroit 925, 15. Dayton 927.

Caine Fitzgerald led Southeast with a 219 score, followed by Sean Edgar 223 and Chad Bradley 224. Southeast's four low scores on Saturday belonged to Fitzgerald 74, Edgar 74, Bradley 76, and Jim Giacone 77.

The Indians stood eighth after the first round and moved up to second after the second round.

"We played real well the second round and got back in contention," said Southeast coach Carroll Williams.

In finishing third, Southeast posted the best finish of any OVC team in the tournament. Every OVC team was represented with the exception of Eastern Kentucky and Middle Tennessee.

"It was good the kids could compete and handle these seven other OVC schools," said Williams.

Southeast returns to action April 24-25 in the OVC Tournament.
