DONIPHAN, Mo. --Three Tigers posted career highs in points as Central defeated Doniphan 103-96 in overtime in a SEMO Conference boys basketball game Tuesday night.
Sophomore Scott Chestnutt, who had scored 32 points twice this season, posted a new career-high with 35 points as the Tigers posted their highest point total since 1994. Also recording career-high totals were point guard Will Johnson, 25 points, and Mitch Craft, 16 points.
Johnson attempted 23 free throws and scored 18 of his points at the line. He also finished with nine assists.
"Will Johnson may be the most improved point guard in the state," Central coach Derek McCord said.
Central improved to 13-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Doniphan fell to 7-9.
Junior Ryan Delph added 14 points for the Tigers, including a big 3-pointer with about 13 seconds left in the game to tie the score 85-85. Brett Reed gave Doniphan an 87-85 lead with about six seconds left on a pair of free throws. Johnson forced overtime when he drove the length of the floor and scored on a layup just before the buzzer, tying the score 87-87.
The Tigers scored the first points of overtime on a Chestnutt dunk and never trailed.
Four Don starters fouled out, including leading scorer Danny Kellas, who finished with 22 points.
Sikeston 67, Jackson 57
Jackson outscored Sikeston 20-11 in the fourth quarter and pulled to within five points in the final minute, but it wasn't enough to overcome the host Bulldogs in a SEMO Conference game.
Sikeston (6-10) took a 35-27 lead into halftime and stretched it with an 11-0 run in the third quarter. A 3-point basket by Jackson cut it to 59-52 in the final two minutes of the game, and another 3-pointer a minute later cut the margin to five, where it stayed.
Tyler Boyd led Jackson (8-11) with 20 points and Tyler McNeely had 18. Lontas McClinton scored 16 to lead Sikeston.
Chaffee 48, Leopold 47, OT
James Reischmann hit a free throw with no time remaining on the clock in overtime to lift Chaffee to its first victory of the season.
Reischmann, who was fouled on a shot at the buzzer, led Chaffee (1-10) with 17 points. Sam Burnett added 16 points in the road win.
Josh Van de Ven finished with 17 points for Leopold (3-11) and Kevin Holzum had 16.
Meadow Heights 65, Zalma 64
Zalma continued its winless slide at home as a basket at the buzzer was negated in a loss to Meadow Heights.
After a missed free throw from Panthers' Terry Wagner, Nick Hartman drove the length of the floor to lay the ball up as the buzzer sounded. The basket was waved off.
Joey Bell and Brad Adams each had 18 points for Meadow Heights (10-3). Josh Fulton had 15 and Terry Wagner added 10.
Brad McKlin led Zalma (4-8)with 26 points while Jamie Mangrum had 15 and Chad Wiseman 13.
Chris Burr left in the third quarter with what Panthers coaches say is a broken ankle. Burr could miss the rest of the season.
Delta 69, Marquand 57
Delta (3-11) picked up a road win over winless Marquand.
Joey Keys led Delta with 21 points while Daniel Cook put in 13 and Derek Heldermann scored 12. Marquand (0-11) was led by Josh King with 19 and Adam Mills with 14.
The game was tied at the end of the third quarter, 47-47, but Delta outscored Marquand 22-10 in the final eight minutes.
Oran 65, Oak Ridge 41
Ryne Wood scored 27 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead Oran to a home victory over Oak Ridge.
Matt Seyer added 10 points for Oran (14-4). Alex Fadler led Oak Ridge with 17 points.
Scott Co. Central 95, East Prairie 77
Scott County Central downed East Prairie at home.
East Prairie jumped to an eight point lead in the first quarter, thanks to the 3-point shooting of Matt Boyer and Jordan Sanders. Boyer finished with 32 points.
Chris Pullen led Central with 24 points. Andrew Pullen added 15, Dajuan Watkins 12, and Anthony Turner 11.
St. Vincent 79, Crystal City 57
St. Vincent improved to 2-2 in the Jefferson County Conference with a home win over Crystal City.
Matt Wengert led the way for St. Vincent (7-6) with 18 points and Aaron Rellergert added 16.
Brad Link scored 16 to lead Crystal City and Wade Townsend added 10.
Eagle Ridge 62, Trinity 53
Eagle Ridge jumped out to a nine-point lead in the first quarter and protected the margin until the end.
Andrew Mellies had a big night inside for Eagle Ridge (6-7). He scored 31 points and had five blocks. T. J. Crowden complemented him with 13 points.
Girls' basketball
WOODLAND 41, EAST PRAIRIE 18
Woodland held East Prairie scoreless in the first quarter on its way to a road win.
Woodland took a 10-0 lead into the second quarter and led 24-7 at halftime.
Kandice Abner led Woodland (6-7) with 10 points.
WRESTLING
Tigers split double dual, Jackson sweeps
Central's wrestling team posted a 47-21 dual victory over Rockwood Summit but dropped its match to Marquette 37-36.
Jackson swept both opponents to improve to 7-0 on the season. The Indians defeated Marquette 45-17 and then knocked off Rockwood Summit 70-6.
Central (4-3) will host a double-dual makeup match tonight at 5 p.m.
SWIMMING
Central 94, Notre Dame 90
After dropping their first meet to Notre Dame earlier this season, Central got its revenge with a close win.
Central had four first place finishers: Kris Metje took first in the 500 freestyle in 5:39.79; Sam Maguire took first in the 200 IM in 2:13.15; Alex Heddle won the 50 free in 23.75; and the 200 free relay team of Andrew Moreton, Heddle, Clay Schermann and Maguire won in 1:26.31.
Notre Dame took home seven first-place finishes. The 200 medley relay made up of Jordan Kuper, Jameson Kuper, John Fisher and John Stoverink took first in 1:52.28. The Bulldogs' 400 free relay team of Jameson Kuper, Jordan Kuper, Fisher and Stephen Hine placed first in 3:42.36.
Fisher also won the 100 butterfly in 59.12 and the 200 free in 2:02.99. Jameson Kuper captured firsts in the 100 free and 100 breast. Stoverink scored a 204.5 to take first in diving and Jordan Kuper took first in the 100 back.
