The early season problems of the Southeast Missouri State University softball team failed to take a day off when Mississippi visited for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
Mississippi inflicted a pair of 8-0 losses on the Otahkians to drop Southeast to 0-5 on the season. Both games ended due to the mercy rule.
Southeast, recently picked to finish first in the Ohio Valley Conference, has been outscored 42-2 on the season.
In the opener, Mississippi's Jennifer Hughes (5-2) limited Southeast to just a first-inning single. She struck out eight and walked just one in six innings.
Jenny Doehring (0-2) allowed 11 hits, struck out seven and walked one.
Brooke Nett had the Otahkians' lone hit, a single.
Mississippi scored two runs apiece in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings. Desiree Layman led Mississippi with two hits and three RBIs.
In the second game, Southeast managed four hits but were still blanked by Lindsay Price (3-3). She struck out six and walked four in five innings.
Losing pitcher Kristen King (0-3) allowed 10 hits, struck out three and walked one.
Nett, Emmy Kisaka, Kathryn Cerneka and Kemi Rampi each had a hit for Southeast.
Layman added two more hits and two RBIs in the game.
Mississippi broke a scoreless deadlock with two runs in the third, added a pair of runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth.
