Southeast Missouri State University head men's basketball coach Gary Garner is losing a key member of his staff.
Tom Schuberth, one of Garner's assistants at Southeast the past two seasons, has resigned to accept a job as head coach at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn.
"I certainly hate to lose Tom because he has been a key member of our staff, but I understand that this is a good opportunity for him to become a head coach at a school with a good Division II program," said Garner, who added that Schuberth was a major factor in the success the Indians enjoyed last season.
"Tom did a great job for us. He is an outstanding recruiter and should be credited with helping us achieve our 20-win season last year and with helping bring in the recruits we have been able to attract the past two years."
This year's recruiting class at Southeast was ranked 39th nationally by Hoopscoop Online.
At Christian Brothers, Schuberth will replace Tom Crowley, who resigned last month.
"We're excited to have Tom join the coaching staff and believe he will play a pivotal role in recruiting outstanding student-athletes, thereby gradually building a competitive basketball program in the Gulf South Conference," said Christian Brothers athletic director Mike Daush.
While Christian Brothers has had some solid teams in the past, the squad has not fared well in recent seasons, including last year's 3-23 record.
Schuberth will be returning to familiar territory in his new position. He served as an assistant coach at Memphis State from 1992-1997 and was credited with helping the Tigers recruit some of the nation's top players.
Garner said he will take his time in deciding on a replacement for Schuberth.
