Susan Beth Scott's first day of competition at the U.S. Paralympics Swimming National Championships in San Antonio, Texas, on Thursday landed the 14-year-old Gator Swim Team member the second-fastest time world-wide this year in the 400 freestyle in her classification.
Scott competes in the S10 classification, the least disabled swimmers, in the 400 free. Ashley Owens won the event in 4 minutes, 51.16 seconds. Scott finished second in 4:52.14, more than eight seconds faster than her preliminary time earlier in the day.
In the 100 breaststroke, where Scott competes in the SB9 classification, Scott finished fourth in the finals in 1:58.20. In the preliminaries Scott had the third-fastest time in 1:55.47.
Gator Swim Team member and Central senior-to-be Hannah Kinder made the finals in the 100 and 200 freestyle events at the Speedo Junior National Championships in Irvine, Calif.
Kinder finished seventh in the 100 free with a time of 57.99 seconds in a field of more than 100 swimmers. Kinder had posted a time of 58.11 seconds in the preliminaries.
In the 200 free, Kinder posted the 19th-fastest time in the preliminaries in 2:05.74. Kinder finished 22nd overall in the event after swimming nearly two seconds slower in the bonus finals.
Kinder will compete in the 50 freestyle today and is looking to make a run at the Olympic Trials cut of 26.39 seconds. Kinder qualified for the Junior Nationals with a time of 26.66 seconds.
Jackson graduate Steffan Troxel, heading into his sophomore season at Indiana University, recently made an Olympic Trials cut at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships in Irvine, Calif.
Troxel finished 23rd in the 1,500 freestyle in 15 minutes, 47.77 seconds. The Olympic Trials cut is 15:53.59.
