Scott County Central defeated New Madrid County Central 63-54 to in the consolation final at the 2023 Delta New Year’s Tournament on Thursday in Delta.
The win snaps a six-game losing streak for the Bravettes (4-8). SCC previously lost to Woodland in the opening round of the tournament on Monday and had a bye on Wednesday while waiting for the winner between NMCC and Advance in the consolation semifinals.
NMCC played with only five girls throughout the tournament. The Eagles lost big in the opening round against St. Vincent on Monday but rebounded with a win on Wednesday over Advance to reach the consolation final.
The game was a showdown between Nikki Adams of the Bravettes and Emani Summers of the Lady Eagles. Both players wear No.12 and both lead their teams by scoring over 20 points.
The Bravettes jumped on the Eagles early with a 17-6 first quarter lead, and kept the pace in the second quarter with 17 more points. Adams provided nearly half of SCC’s scoring with 13 points in the first half.
However, the Eagles would not be left in the dust so easily. Summers carried the Eagles with 15 points in the second quarter to pull them to only a 34-30 deficit going into halftime.
Both Summers and Adams kept the pace in the third quarter, but Adams had more help. Kyla Pearson hit a three-point basket to keep the Bravettes up 52-42 going into the final period.
Summers scored six of the Eagles’ 12 fourth quarter points and it started to look like a comeback was occurring. Unfortunately for NMCC, one of the Eagles’ five players fouled out and they were forced to play the remaining 2:30 minutes with four players against five, killing any momentum they had to mount a rally.
Summers finished with 29 points and Destiny Hughes scored 16 points for the Eagles.
Adams finished with 27 points for the Bravettes.
NMCC hosts Sikeston on Jan. 9, while SCC will host Charleston.
