Scott County advances to final in Charleston wooden bat event

The Scott County American Legion team edged the Charleston Babe Ruth squad 8-7 on Saturday to reach the finals of the Charleston wooden bat tournament.

Charleston loaded the bases with no out in the seventh, but Scott County was able to hold on for the win. Trenton Moses picked up the save despite allowing two runs and three hits in one inning of work.

Andy Stephens picked up the win after allowing three hits in six innings. He had nine walks and two hit batsmen to go along with seven strikeouts.

Moses led the squad with three hits, and Rusty Hendricks and Caleb Daughhetee had two hits apiece.

Scott County will play for the championship at 2:30 p.m. today against Sikeston.

Cape Legion splits pair

The Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons American Legion team scored nine runs in the fourth inning in the second game of a doubleheader to salvage a split at House Springs with a 10-6 win Saturday.

Ford & Sons (9-4) dropped the opening game 4-1.

Adam McMahan and Ty Craft had two hits and two RBIs apiece in the second game. Eric Ennis added two hits for Cape.

Jeremy Brinkmeyer pitched six innings for the win. Brinkmeyer struck out eight, walked three, allowed six hits and three earned runs. Lance Young pitched the seventh for the save.

In the opener, Cape was held to just five hits. Young went 2-for-3 for Cape.

McMahan took the loss, going the distance. McMahan struck out seven, walked two and allowed three earned runs on eight hits.

Ford & Sons will play a doubleheader at Paducah (Ky.) today.
