The Scott City football team's bid for a district championship was dashed in a 50-6 loss Friday night at Crystal City.
Both teams were unbeaten in Class 2 District 2 play entering the game, though Crystal City (7-2) had a gaudier resume than the Rams (3-6). The Hornets clinched the playoff berth with the win.
"They're a good ballclub," Flanigan said. "You can't take anything away from them. I don't feel they're 44 points better than us, but they came to play and we didn't. They're a very well-balanced team."
Scott City's lone touchdown came on a 1-yard run by Ethan Watkins in the second quarter. The two-point conversion failed.
Crystal City held a 28-6 lead at halftime.
The Hornets racked up 630 yards of offense and had three rushers over 100 yards, including Cody DeRousse with 208 on 18 carries and three touchdowns. Quarterback Dominicque Hall ran for 132 yards and two TDs on seven carries and completed 3 of 4 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.
"Defensively, we've had trouble all year with the same thing," Flanigan said. "We have a lot of trouble with speed. On four touchdowns, we had three guys that touched the player and never brought him down. When you have the opportunity to bring them down and you don't, you're not going to win many ballgames."
Rams quarterback Ethan Watkins finished with 80 yards and two interceptions on 8-for-19 passing. Jamie Pinkston had three receptions for 31 yards, and Cody Carlyle compiled 106 yards on 20 carries.
Valle has limited six opponents to eight points or less during a 7-2 campaign so far. But Friday night's shutout of defending Class 1 state champion St. Vincent was something that doesn't happen everyday.
The Indians had not been blanked since a 30-0 loss to Park Hills Central in the second game of the 2002 season.
But Valle's 26-0 win Friday in Perryville, Mo., on the heels of a 29-8 win against Hayti the previous week gave the Warriors the District 1 championship and a berth in the state playoffs.
"We felt we had found ourselves as a team last week," Valle coach Judd Naeger said after Friday's game. "We found another level tonight."
Valle had 316 yards of total offense and limited St. Vincent to 202, including just 88 yards of rushing.
Waylon Richardet had 49 yards on 10 carries to lead the Indians on the ground. Dustin Winkler had 16 yards on eight carries and quarterback Tim Guilliams had 23 yards on seven carries.
