Scott City used a two-out seventh-inning rally and a solid outing from pitcher Andy Stephens to defeat Charleston 4-3 in the first round of the Class 2 District 2 baseball tournament Monday at Scott City.

The Rams, seeded third, trailed 3-0 heading into the seventh, but No. 6 Charleston committed an error and allowed Scott City to score four unearned runs with two outs.

Stephens led off the inning by reaching base on an error. Cody Carlyle then hit a single to center field. After-back-to-back strikeouts, Scott City came up with three straight hits. Blake Dirnberger drove in one run with a basehit, Jason Schnenimann tied the game with a two-run single and Kyle Curry drove in the winning run with a basehit.

"When we got that first guy on, it seemed like we got a little bit of enthusiasm," Scott City coach Mike Umfleet said. "We said a few prayers and got them answered."

Stephens struck out 17 batters for the Rams (7-9), allowing only two hits, one walk and one earned run in seven innings.

"He's just a heckuva competitor," Umfleet said. "He's got a great arm, and he knows what he's doing out there. He was just outstanding today."

Carlyle had two hits to lead Scott City's offense.

The Rams will play No. 2 Crystal City, who defeated Grandview, today at 4 p.m. in the semifinal round.

In other first-round action, St. Vincent's Justin Ruessler pitched eight innings of five-hit baseball and recieved enough offensive support to pick up a 2-1, eight-inning win over No. 4 Valle Catholic of Ste. Genevieve.

Ruessler struck out four, walked only one and allowed no earned runs for the fifth-seeded Indians (9-12), who gained an early lead on catcher Brian Buchheit's RBI single in the first.

Buchheit proceeded to drive home the game-winner in the top of the extra frame, hitting another single that plated Joey Guilliams.

St. Vincent will face Kelly in a semifinal game today at 2 p.m.

Top-seeded Kelly used a one-hitter from Dallas Tew to breese by No. 8 Woodland 13-0 in five innings. Tew struck out 10.

Brandon Ayers led the offesne with a 3-for-3 game. Kendal Deason, Kent Deason, Caleb Daughhetee and Jordan Felter had two hits apiece.

Poplar Bluff upset third-seeded Central in the opening round of the district tournament at Farmington.

The Mules play Farmington today in the semifinal round.

Jackson plays today against Fox, a 4-3 winner over Seckman.

Class 3 District 1

Notre Dame's Aaron Jenkins went 3-for-3 with two doubles to lead the No. 3 Bulldogs to an 11-1, five-inning victory over sixth-seeded Doniphan.

Jacob Wengert added two hits for Notre Dame (16-7), and Blake Essner earned the win on the mound, striking out four and allowing two hits in five innings.

The Bulldogs will face No. 7 Perryville, which upset second-seeded Dexter 8-1, in the semifinal round today at 4:30 p.m.

Chaffee overcame five errors to defeat fifth-seeded Bell City 4-1.

Steven Dooley won his second game on the mound, and Jeff Daugherty had two hits for the No. 4 Devils (7-13).

Nick Niemczyk suffered the loss for Bell City, while Cody Bailey and Garrett McIntyre each had two hits.

Chaffee will play top-seeded Advance, a 10-0 winner over Richland, in the semifinal round at 3 p.m. today.

Craig Friga and Austin Dumey each had three hits as Oran routed Scott County Central 30-2 in five innings.

Kody Campbell pitched three innings for the win. Oran outhit Scott County 24-5.

Trevor Irwin, Chase Seyer, Campbell, Paul Bucher and Ryan Bouge had two hits apiece for the Eagles (16-7).

Paul Johnson had two hits for the Braves.

Oran will face Bernie in the semifinals at 5 p.m. today. Bernie defeated Delta 13-0 in the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Saxony Lutheran had little problems with Lesterville, winning 11-1 in a five-inning, error-plagued quarterfinal game.

Peter Winningham went the distance for the Crusaders and struck out eight.

Dustin Roth, Alex Jauch, Ben Courtois and John Volkerding each had two hits.

Saxony Lutheran will face Oak Ridge at 2 p.m. today in the semfinals.

Austin Morrison pitched six shutout innings and struck out seven batters to lead fourth-seeded Oak Ridge to a 6-0 victory over No. 5 South Iron.

Austin Hahs had three RBI for the Blue Jays.

Second-seeded Leopold defeated No. 7 Viburnum 12-8 in another first-round game.

Matt Stoverink pitched seven innings and struck out eight batters for the win.

Michael Vandeven went 3-for-3 for the Wildcats (10-8), and Kelly Stause, Stacey Peters and Eric Seiler each added two hits.

Leopold will take on Valley of Caledonia today at 4 p.m. in a semifinal game.

No. 6 Valley slammed 18 hits on third-seeded Meadow Heights in a 12-5 win.

Brian Miinch suffered the loss on the mound for the Panthers.
