PORTAGEVILLE -- Scott City High's football team, expected to be among the better small-school squads in Southeast Missouri, has certainly lived up to that billing so far.
The Rams improved to 2-0 Friday night by routing host Portageville 44-12. Scott City had ripped Malden 39-12 the week before.
Scott City rolled up 510 yards of offense and held Portageville to only 188 yards in an impressive display.
"It was a big game for us and a really good win," said Scott City coach Terry Flannigan. "It was a really good team effort. They all played very well."
Quarterback Lance Amick and receiver Brandon Amick hooked up for some big completions, including a 15-yard pass play in the first quarter that put Scott City ahead 7-0.
Matt Underwood scored on two short runs, from three yards and one yard, while Scott Johnston broke loose for a 60-yard touchdown run. Lance Amick added a four-yard TD scamper while Andrew Estes went over from two yards out late in the game.
Lucas Ward kicked a 38-yard field goal and added four extra points. John Wipfler also kicked a conversion.
Scott City built a 21-6 halftime lead. Portageville pulled to within 21-12 early in the third quarter, but the Rams scored the game's final 23 points to win going away.
Gosnell (Ark.) 49, Chaffee 7
CHAFFEE -- After Chaffee's G.P. Glueck's 13-yard touchdown run in the first quarter tied the score 7-7, Gosnell scored the next 42 points Friday night.
"Gosnell has a very powerful offense," said Chaffee coach Brian Horrell. "They're very much as good as advertised."
Chaffee fell to 0-2.
St. Vincent 22, Fredericktown 0
FREDERICKTOWN -- Behind 251 yards rushing, including 104 yards on 19 carries from Bryan Meyer, St. Vincent won Friday night and improved to 2-0.
"They ran the ball over us," said Fredericktown coach Kent Gibbs, whose team dropped to 1-1.
St. Vincent middle linebacker Aaron Unterreiner had seven solo tackles and assisted on four others.
