EAST PRAIRIE -- Scott City High football coach Terry Flannigan attributed his team's sluggish start in Friday night's game at East Prairie to its mindset that "we thought we could go in there and conquer the world."
After Scott City reduced its sights to the game at hand, the Rams bumped up their defense in the second half and ran away with 35-0 victory.
The Rams, ranked No. 5 in Missouri Class 2A, are 3-0 overall and also 3-0 in SEMO South Conference play. They have won each game by at least 27 points.
"We're where we were hoping we would be at this point," Flannigan said.
Although the Rams built a 14-0 first-quarter lead on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Lance Amick to Matt Underwood and a 28-yard interception that was run back by Steve n Thomas, "we played really flat in the first half," Flannigan said.
Still ahead 14-0 at halftime, Scott City kindled previous' weeks success in the third quarter with three scores. Dale Burger darted 70 yards for a touchdown, Brandon Amick ran back an interception 99 yards and Underwood plunged in from a yard out for the final score.
In addition to the two interceptions, the Rams handcuffed East Prairie (1-2) to just 58 yards total offense.
"Our defense cam up with a couple of big plays," Flannigan said. "Our defense played very well."
Scott City will face a big test next Friday night when the Rams travel to Class 4A Perryville.
Fulton Co. 34, Chaffee 6
FULTON, Ky. -- A 21-0 halftime deficit may not seem much cause for celebration. But in light of Chaffee's 40-point intermission deficit in last year's bout with Fulton County, Ky., Red Devils coach Brian Horrell was elated.
And, considering Fulton County's whopping bulk advantage on the lines, Chaffee's eventual 28-point defeat Friday night didn't leave Horrell the least distraught.
In fact, "Our kids played outstanding," Horrell said. "We moved the ball well in the first half but we just couldn't come up with any points."
And two of Fulton County's three scores came on a 71-yard pass play in the first quarter and a 7-yard run whisked in as the half elapsed.
Chaffee, which dropped to 0-3, at last fulfilled a drive with a 10-yard touchdown run from sophomore Travis Hanback. That run accounted for all but 26 of the Red Devils' yards on the ground in this pass-happy game.
Chaffee quarterback Matt Graham completed 13 of 28 passes for 149 yards. G.P. Glueck snatched five of those for 42 yards, and Nick Cook grabbed two for 34 yards.
Fulton County heaped 199 yards rushing and 170 yards through the air.
Chaffee returns to action next Friday night by hosting Portageville.
