CHAFFEE -- Top-seeded Scott City and No. 2 Kelly posted easy victories Monday night as the Chaffee girls basketball tournament got under way.
Scott City destroyed East Prairie, the eighth and last seed, 91-25. Kelly rolled past No. 7 Oran 67-39. Also Monday, No. 5 Sikeston downed No. 4 Delta 40-31.
The final first-round game will be played at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday as No. 3 Portageville and No. 6 Chaffee square off. Also that night, Scott City meets Sikeston in a semifinal at 7. The other semifinal will be Thursday.
Scott City (3-0) led 26-10 after one quarter and 59-14 at halftime. Becca Gowin poured in 27 points while also in double figures were Alaina Smith with 13 and Crystal Smith and Lani Bedwell with 12 apiece.
Kelly got 19 points from Audrey Burford, 18 from Marissa Essner and 16 from Bridgette Riley. Oran was paced by Sara Heisserer with 16 points and Ashley Dirnberger with 10.
Kristin Fish scored 14 points for Delta in a losing effort while Amanda Cook had 14.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Sikeston Tournament
SIKESTON -- Sikeston and Blytheville, Ark. -- the top two seeds -- each prevailed Monday night as the 27th annual Sikeston Tournament began.
No. 1 Sikeston rolled past No. 8 Kennett 51-33 while No. 2 Blytheville pulled away late to upend No. 7 Charleston, the defending champion, 60-43.
Also Monday, No. 5 Poplar Bluff got a shot at the buzzer to beat No. 4 New Madrid County Central 51-49.
No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 6 Cape Central play at 5:30 p.m. today to close out the first round. At 8:30 tonight, Sikeston and Poplar Bluff meet in a semifinal.
Ryan Whelan drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Poplar Bluff. Whelan and Mike Kilgore both scored 16 points. New Madrid got 20 from P.J. Branum.
Bryan Ellitt scored 19 points and Tyler Trum added 10 to pace Sikeston. Kennett's Anton McKinney scored 12.
James Cullins's 21 points sparked Blytheville, which led just 42-38 entering the fourth quarter. Charleston got 13 from Jeff Ewing and 12 from Terrance Gillespie.
JV GIRLS BASKETBALL
Jackson Tournament
JACKSON -- Notre Dame beat Perryville 52-39 and Jackson downed Cape Central 45-31 as round-robin play began Monday night.
Tonight, Jackson plays Perryville at 6 and Cape Central faces Notre Dame at 7:30.
Freshman basketball
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Cape Central's freshman boys teams lost a pair of games to Carbondale on Monday.
Carbondale won the `A' game 51-33. Jordan White scored 11 points for the Tigers. Central dropped the `B' game 56-50. Darnelius Harris scored 10 points in the losing effort.
