BENTON -- Scott City High's baseball team came away with the Kelly Tournament title Saturday, beating the rain and two opponents in the four-team tourney.
The Rams knocked off Kelly 9-4 in the opening game of the day, then beat Jackson 10-8 in the championship game. The third-place game between Kelly (10-2) and Perryville got rained out with the score tied 4-4. Jackson beat Perryville 11-5 to make it to the title game.
The title game was a wild one, coming down to the final at-bat for Jackson. Jackson's Travis Stevens, who had yet to make an out in the tournament, struck out with the bases loaded to end the game.
Stevens finished the tourney 8-for-9 with two home runs and six RBIs. Todd Wessel also had two home runs on the day as Jackson (7-8) totaled 26 hits.
Chris Schlick got the win in the first game, pitching all seven innings and allowing only one earned run.
Oran Tournament
ORAN -- The Wildcats won their three-team tournament Saturday with wins over Bloomfield and Advance.
Oran (12-2) belted 15 hits to beat Bloomfield 11-3 then knocked off Advance 6-1 with 10 hits for the title. Advance beat Bloomfield 7-3.
Jeremy Pobst and Dustin Dannenmueller both had three hits in the win over Bloomfield. Billy Loper, Justin McAlister and Jeff Schaefer all had two hits. Adam Friga (1-0) got the win.
Dannenmueller, Loper and McAlister had two hits each in the win over Advance (8-4). Dannenmueller (2-1) scattered five hits for the win.
Chris Wallace drove in the only run for Advance.
SWIMMING
Springfield Invitational
SPRINGFIELD -- Cape Central scored 129 points to place fifth out of 28 teams Saturday at the Springfield Invitational.
Columbia Hickman blew away the field with 323 points followed by Blue Springs South 139.5, Park Hill-Kansas City 137, Springfield-Glendale 134.5 and then Cape Central. No other team scored over 100 points.
Central's only first-place finish came in the 400-yard relay in a near-record time of 3:46.59. The team consists of Jennifer Freeze, Jean Maguire, Mary Beth Owen and Grace Freeman.
Those four girls also combined for a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay with a season-best 1:44.55.
Individually, Maguire was second in 200 freestyle (2:03.47); Owen second in the 200 IM (2:16.29) and third in the 100 freestyle (54.92); and Freeman was second in the 50 freestyle (25.26) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (55.92).
Central's last regular-season meet is at Nerinx Hall on Thursday.
TRACK
Central 9th-grade boys win
Cape Central's 9th-grade boys track team finished its season undefeated Saturday at the Jackson Invitational.
Central won the meet with 168 points. The 8th-grade girls finished second among 14 teams and the 8th-grade boys were sixth among 17 teams.
