Scott captures more gold with world record at international swm meet

Cape Girardeau's Susan Beth Scott capped her performance at the IPC Short Course World Championships swimming meet in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with her second world record.

Scott won the gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle, touching the wall in 1 minute, 2.48 seconds. She barely edged Spain's Esther Fernandez, who led by three-tenths of a second halfway home.

Saturday's gold was a bit of revenge for Scott, who finished second to Fernandez in the 50 freestyle earlier in the meet.

"In the 50, Esther's start killed me," Scott said in a release. "But I knew I had two more 25s to catch her with in the 100.

"I'm best suited for long course because I'm usually not strong on my turns. But overall, I'm pleased with my performance this week."

Scott, 17, finished the meet with two golds, two silvers and a bronze. She competed for the United States at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, where she captured a bronze medal in the 400 freestyle. She trained at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in preparation for the Paralympic Games.
