A career performance by Southeast Missouri State senior quarterback Matt Scheible has resulted in an Ohio Valley Conference honor.

Scheible was named the OVC co-offensive player of the week Sunday after leading the Redhawks to their first win, Saturday's 37-30 victory over visiting Eastern Illinois.

Scheible accounted for 291 yards of total offense and all five of Southeast's touchdowns against the Panthers.

Scheible rushed for a career-high 161 yards, the most by an OVC player this season, on 19 carries. He scored two touchdowns, including a career-long 71-yard run on the opening drive of the third quarter to put the Redhawks up for good. He added an 18-yard TD with 1:55 left to give Southeast a 37-23 lead.

Scheible also completed 14 of 18 passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

"You have to take your hat off to Scheible," Southeast coach Tony Samuel said following the game. "I think I told you guys I thought he was special when I met him in the principal's office [while Samuel was recruiting Scheible in Washington, Mo.].

"He's just one of those special people."

Scheible, who has started every game since the beginning of his sophomore season, has 5,874 yards of total offense for his career. He ranks second all-time at Southeast and needs less than 60 yards to break the record.

Scheible ranks seventh on Southeast's career rushing yards list with 1,983 and eighth in career passing yards with 3,892. He is a lock to become the first quarterback in OVC history to throw for at least 4,000 yards and rush for at least 2,000 yards in his career.

Southeast (1-3, 1-1 OVC) visits Tennessee State (1-4, 0-2) Saturday in a 6 p.m. kickoff.
