Saxton and Stone lead short-handed Portageville in win at Bloomfield

BLOOMFIELD, Mo. — A short-handed Portageville squad defeated Bloomfield on Monday, Jan. 23.

Amiyah Saxton and Laney Stone scored 17 and 13, respectively, and led the Lady Bulldogs (13-4) to a 64-37 win over the Lady Wildcats (5-10).

“We had a lot to overcome in this game with several girls out,” said Portageville coach Kellye Fowler. “We called on some of our younger girls up and play varsity and I was proud of how they handled themselves. It took us a while to get going, and adjusted to the different lineup, but the girls played hard throughout and persevered.”

Portageville led 29-17 at halftime but outscored its opponent 35-20 in the second half.

“Lots of lessons were learned tonight,” Fowler added. “I was also very proud of the leadership that Amiyah Saxton and Laney Stone showed. A lot of time they were the only experienced players on the floor and they were sometimes asked to play out of position. They were able to make the adjustments and lead us to another win.”

Portageville travels to Hayti (5-13) on Tuesday and hosts Kennett (13-6) on Thursday.

The team will also compete in the Bootheel Conference Tournament that is set to begin on Saturday.

Bloomfield will be back in action on Thursday when it hosts South Pemiscot (2-7).
