The Saxony Lutheran boys volleyball team defeated the Seckman Jaguars 3-0 on Monday at Saxony Lutheran High School. The Crusaders dominated in straight sets, winning 25-9, 25-18 and 25-14.

This win makes number 10 for Saxony and they continue to beat schools much larger than them, with Seckman having over 1500 more students enrolled. Crusaders head coach Stephanie Brown said her team did a lot of things right and capitalized on the things the Jaguars did wrong.

“We were blocking well tonight, we got a lot of touches on the ball and put the ball back on their side and we let them make the mistakes,” Brown said. “I think they did get a little intimidated by our blocks so they were tipping a lot, which we ended up picking up as well. I just think we had an all-around good match tonight.”

Saxony’s Luke Eggemeyer and Jonathan Palmer led the Crusaders on offense with the senior Eggemeyer finishing with 19 kills while sophomore Palmer totaled 11 assists. Most of those assists went to Eggemeyer as the duo played like Olympic legends Kerri Walsh-Jennings and Misty May-Treanor. Eggemeyer also had five blocks on defense, Brown said those two come up big for the team in every game.

“They're leaders, especially Luke who's really a basketball player but has stepped up and become a leader on the volleyball court. He understands the game and helps his teammates out, he's just a great kid, great leader, and has thrived,” Brown said. “Jonathan is young but he knows the game well. He's played the game a lot and he's able to help out in those cases as well.”

With just three matches left before the Class 1 District 1 Tournament, Brown said the Crusaders just need to keep working hard in practice and try to improve whenever they can. Saxony next travels to Lutheran St. Charles on Friday where they will take on the Cougars at 6:30 p.m.
