The Saxony Lutheran boys soccer team posted a victory in the program's first varsity game Friday, beating Webb City 3-2 in penalty kicks during the opening round of the Thomas Jefferson tournament in Joplin, Mo.
Saxony Lutheran and Webb City were tied 2-2 after regulation and overtime. The Crusaders then converted all five of their penalty kicks while Webb City made four.
Garrett Fritsche and Andrew Etzold scored goals for the Crusaders, while Mark Buerck earned an assist.
Fritsche, Etzold, Buerck, Alex Rodewald and Ben Buescher all converted penalty kicks, with Buescher's the game-winner.
The Crusaders play host Thomas Jefferson today in the tournament semifinals.
Notre Dame lost for the first time this season, suffering a home overtime defeat against Whitfield, a St. Louis County private school that was the Class 1 runner-up last year.
Austin Gelsheimer scored the goal for Notre Dame (5-1) with an assist from Abe Dirnberger.
Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn took blame, saying he tinkered in the second half to use "a lineup I've been wanting to try against a good team."
After making a switch back, Notre Dame surrendered a goal to fall behind for the first time this season. Gelsheimer's goal sent the match to overtime.

Central and Francis Howell Central battled to a draw on the opening day of the round-robin Francis Howell tournament in St. Charles, Mo.
The Tigers (1-3-1) trailed 1-0 at halftime but received an unassisted goal from Lucian Johnson midway through the second half.

Jackson won its first game in the round-robin Rolla (Mo.) tournament.
Chris Shelton, Chris Crossett and Brian Davidson scored for the Indians (4-2), with Shelton and Andrew Lysell getting assists.

Daniel Cohen scored two unassisted goals and assisted on another for Eagle Ridge Christian School, but it wasn't enough in a Thursday night contest.
After scoring twice in the first 25 minutes, Cohen assisted on Aaron Shell's goal.
Goalkeeper Daniel Lies made 13 saves in defeat.
Notre Dame joined St. Vincent, Leopold and Bell City as area teams with two wins in pool play Friday at the annual tournament.
The 40-team event is being played at Notre Dame and the Student Recreation Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State.
The Bulldogs (6-5) beat Meadow Heights 25-16, 25-20 and Seckman 25-20, 25-24.
St. Vincent (10-0) turned aside Advance 25-8, 25-7 and Saxony Lutheran 25-13, 25-9. Leopold topped Richland 25-11, 25-2 and Kennett 25-14, 25-9, while Bell City hammered Marquand 25-9, 25-8 and St. Elizabeth 25-8, 25-16.
