Saxony Lutheran's first-year varsity boys basketball program picked up its first conference title with a 71-64 win over Meadow Heights at the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament Saturday at Oak Ridge.

In a foul-plagued game in which Meadow Heights picked up two technicals, the Crusaders used a strong fourth quarter to come away with the win. Meadow Heights led 55-45 heading into the fourth quarter, but was outscored 26-9 in the final period.

Tim Lorenz led Saxony Lutheran (14-2) with 22 points. Lauren Lueders had 16 points, all in the second half, and John Volkerding added 10.

Meadow Heights got 16 points from Joel Hahs and 15 apiece from Heath Fulton and Terry Wagner.

Marquand beat Leopold in the third-place game 46-37 and Oak Ridge picked up its second straight win with a 53-44 win over Zalma in the consolation final.

Brandon Stoverink and Kelly Stause scored 12 apiece to lead Leopold.

For Oak Ridge, Austin Hahs had 19 points, Austin Morrison had 15 and Terry Bogenpohl had 10. Zalma was led by David Hovis' 16 points.Championship
