Uzoaru places 10th at NCAA championships
Marisa Uzoaru, a 1999 Cape Central graduate, tied for 10th in the high-jump competition at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Baton Rouge, La.
Uzoaru, a junior at Florida A & M University, narrowly missed medaling. Her jump of 5 feet, 8.75 inches equaled the height of the eighth-place finisher, the last medal position, but she had more misses.
Heather Jerkins, Southeast Missouri State University's freshman discus thrower, was scheduled to compete late Friday evening.
Results of the women's discus competition were unavailable at press time.
SEMO women finish 2nd, men 5th in all-sports
Eastern Illinois University swept the Ohio Valley Conference all-sports trophies, the first to win both the men's and women's awards in the same year since 1994. The all-sports trophies are awarded to the top school with overall excellence in OVA championships in all sports.
Southeast's women finished second for the second straight year with 90 points to Eastern's 102. Eastern Kentucky was third with 89.
Among men, Eastern had 90 points ahead of Murray State and Eastern Kentucky (78 each), Tennessee Tech (66) and Southeast (64).
Central's Komorech signs with Southeast
Central pole vaulter Becky Komorech signed a letter of intent Friday to attend Southeast Missouri State University.
Komorech, who began pole vaulting as a junior, broke the Central school record four times her senior season. She ultimately raised the Tigers' record to 10 feet, 6 inches.
Elfrink, Stoverink win horseshoe event
Tyler Elfrink and Edgar Stoverink won the 16-team Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association event Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jackson, Mo. Randy Grady and Marilyn Landewee were second with Irv Vandeven and Ron LeGrand third.

Basketball
Saint Louis University Billikens sophomore guard Jason Edwin has left the program for academic reasons, coach Brad Soderberg said Friday. Details were not released.
Edwin, a native of Warsaw, Ill., was the team's second-leading scorer last season, averaging 9.2 points while starting 18 of 31 games.
Hockey
St. Louis Blues center Doug Weight had surgery Friday to repair a lower abdominal injury, the team said.
He was expected to be fully recovered by the start of the 2002-2003 season.
Weight, 31, was hurt Feb. 28 at Calgary on a check by Bob Boughner, suffering a sprained pelvis. He misssed 20 games, returning in the next-to-last regular season game against Detroit. For the season, Weight had 15 goals and 34 assists.
