Barb Johnson was medalist in the Kimbeland Ladies Golf event, where the play of the day was "guess your putts." Lillian Schneider won the championship, Jackie Anderson and Sharon McCune the A-flight, Sandy Hess and Bonnie Kinder the B-flight and Connie Nesslein the C-flight.

Mike Sutton was hired as men's basketball coach on by Tennessee Tech, which is coming off its best season in school history. Sutton, an assistant coach at Kentucky for five years, replaces Jeff Lebo, who took the Chattanooga job earlier this month after leading the Golden Eagles to a 27-7 record and a trip to the NIT quarterfinals.
Sutton, 46, takes over the post immediately. Terms of his contract were not immediately available.
Tennis
Jennifer Capriati was dropped from the U.S. Fed Cup squad for scheduling a private practice session in violation of captain Billie Jean King's team policy. With the second-ranked Capriati out, the United States will forfeit today's singles match in the best-of-five series.
Lleyton Hewitt rolled in the quarterfinals of the Open Seat Godo clay-court tennis tournament, downing Younes El Aynaoui 6-4, 6-2 at Barcelona, Spain. Albert Costa, Gaston Gaudio and Guillermo Canas also advanced to the semifinals.
