Baseball
An arrest warrant was issued for former baseball star Jose Canseco for violating his probation stemming from a nightclub brawl. Circuit Judge Leonard E. Glick issued the warrant after being told Canseco has failed to begin community service, take anger control classes and not leave Florida for longer than 30 days. Those were among the conditions of his probation, as well as the payment of court costs and sending monthly reports.
The Royals won their arbitration case with Carlos Beltran, and the center fielder will make $6 million this season instead of the $6.95 million he sought.
Colleges
Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville signed a new five-year contract worth $1.5 million annually, with a hefty buyout clause and incentives that could push it over $2 million.
Wisconsin football coach Barry Alvarez will also be the school's athletic director starting in April 2004. Pat Richter, the school's AD since 1989, announced Friday he will retire. He's the Big Ten's longest-tenured athletic director.
Motorsports
Rick Crawford got his first truck victory in nearly five years Friday, losing and regaining the lead in the final lap of a frantic three-wide battle. Crawford nipped Travis Kvapil by 0.027-seconds -- about 10 feet -- with Robert Pressley only a few feet farther back in the Florida Dodge Dealers 250 at Daytona International Speedway. It was the season opener for the Craftsman Truck Series.
Mark Martin, a four-time series champion, beat Roush Racing teammate and IROC rookie Kurt Busch to the finish line Friday by 0.123-second -- about 1 1/2 car-lengths -- at Daytona International Speedway, giving him a record-tying 11th IROC victory.

Top-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland advanced to the semifinals of the Open 13 tennis tournament with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands.
