The Oak Ridge girls' basketball team defeated Puxico 62-26 in the first round of the BCS Conference Tournament on Monday, Jan. 8 at Meadow Heights High School.

The Lady Jays took a commanding 24-6 lead in the first quarter and were able to cruise to halftime with only eight added points. Oak Ridge kept the pressure going in the second half with 12 points scored in the third quarter and 18 points during the final period.

"Our defense looked real good, very active, and got our hands on a lot of passes that resulted in fastbreaks," Oak Ridge head coach Julie Ward said.

As usual, junior Reagan Howe led the Lady Jays with 17 points and eight rebounds. Madyson Ruehling added 11 points and seven rebounds, followed by nine points from MaKayla Rangel, seven from Hayley Hahs, six from Madalyn Schemel, five from Kinsley Bogenpohl, three from Olivia Schaper and two each from Reese Morrison and Addy Barks.

"We worked the ball around to find the open shot and was able to knock down some outside shots," Ward said. "It was a pretty good game all around."

Oak Ridge has improved its record to 8-6. The Lady Jays won a program-high 10 games last year and are two wins away from reaching it this season. That can be done this week with a championship at the conference tournament, as the Lady Jays are set to take on Meadow Heights, the host school, in the semifinal round on Wednesday, at 6:30 p.m.
