Kerry Robinson didn't get to play against the Cardinals -- his former team -- after all.
Robinson, a Southeast Missouri State product, had been the Royals' regular center fielder for nearly the past three weeks after being called up from Class AAA Omaha.
But before Kansas City began a three-game series with visiting St. Louis Friday night, Robinson was designated for assignment.
That move was made after Shane Costa, who began the season as the Royals' starting center fielder, was ready to join Kansas City again.
Costa was batting .317 in 19 games before going on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. After three games in extended spring training and two games with Class AA Wichita, Costa was in the lineup against the Cardinals Friday night.
Robinson, who batted .274 in 16 games for the Royals, must pass through waivers before he can accept an assignment to Omaha. Robinson played for the Cardinals from 2001 to 2003.
