Preparations are underway for Cape Central’s SEMO Conference opener.

The Tigers are set to face off with the Poplar Bluff Mules in a rematch of last year’s district championship game on Friday at Cape Central High School.

Despite last week’s loss to Hillsboro, the Tigers are gaining confidence.

One member of the Tigers defense in particular is also gaining confidence, first-year football player Matayo Rivers.

Against Hillsboro, Rivers intercepted two passes including one for a touchdown that tied the game in the fourth quarter.

“My coaches have always preached about being the next guy up,” Rivers said. “I was ready and it was a big game.”

After Friday’s loss, Tigers coach Kent Gibbs praised Rivers for his relentlessness.

“Matayo is a first-year football player,” Gibbs said. “He gave up one play, and I said, ‘Look, you’re right there, man. Just keep making plays.’ And he came up with a big interception late.”

As Rivers dashed for the end zone on his second interception of the night, his confidence was increasing.

“It really boosted my self esteem and confidence,” Rivers said. “Just knowing what I’m capable of on the field (is big).”

In the winter you can see Rivers in action as a pesky defender on the basketball court, something that is helping his transition to being a defensive back.

“(Basketball) has helped me a lot especially with me playing cornerback,” Rivers said. “You’re just playing defense just like in basketball.”

Seeing the success the Tigers had in 2022 gave Rivers motivation to join the program this season.

“It was the success and a lot of my teammates that were playing,” Rivers said of his motivation. “A lot of my coaches wanted me to play so I feel like I had to.”

Like doing anything for the first time, there will be challenges along the way.

“I’ve faced a lot of challenges,” Rivers said. “I’m just getting used to it and getting used to it being a physical sport. I’m also getting used to being around a whole different group of guys.”

Rivers and the Tigers know they have to be focused on Friday as they welcome a desperate Mules team who is winless into town.

“It’s going to take a lot of stops on defense,” Rivers said. “Our effort will need to be there as well.”

The battle with Poplar Bluff will wrap up the Tigers’ three-game home stand to begin the season.

“We’re looking for a big game,” Rivers said. “Hopefully we can come out with the win.”

Kickoff between the Mules and Tigers is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8 at Cape Central High School.
