Southeast Missouri State University's volleyball team concluded the opening weekend of the 2005 season with an 0-3 record, dropping all three of its games in the Missouri State Invitational.
The host Bears swept the Redhawks on Sunday, winning 30-22, 30-15 and 30-21.
Southeast led the first game 11-7 before the Bears went on a 9-1 run for a 16-12 lead, an advantage they never relinquished.
Missouri State took a commanding 15-6 lead in the second set and cruised to the victory.
Southeast led briefly in the third set, 2-1, before Missouri State again seized control. After pulling even, the Bears never trailed again.
The Bears, who were ranked second nationally in blocks last season, held the Redhawks to a .064 attack percentage for the match. Missouri State blocked 10 shots in the match, which helped force 29 attack errors by the Redhawks.
Jessica Koeper led Southeast will 11 kills, while Jamie Baumstark had nine. Baumstark finished with a team-high 27 assists. Lauren Scannell turned in a match-high 17 digs for the Redhawks.
Sabrina Apker and Katie Werges each finished with a match-high 12 kills for Missouri State. Ashley Warren dished out 37 assists, and Katie Kreimer recorded 15 digs.
Southeast returns to action this weekend at the Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Redhawks will begin play Saturday morning against Air Force.
Southeast soccer wins
Two days after rain ended Southeast's season debut against Gardener-Webb in a 0-0 deadlock, the Redhawks picked up their first victory, defeating Indiana University-Purdue Unversity Indianapolis 2-0 on Sunday at the Lady Gov's Tournament in Clarksville, Tenn.
Sophomore Alaina Lacopo scored the only goal Southeast would need 31 minutes into the first half. Lacopo kicked in her own rebound after Jaguar goalkeeper Jessie Mann made the initial save.
Erin Hartmann added an insurance goal at the 62:31 mark of the second half, scoring on a rebound from a shot by Megan Hejlek.
Southeast had 19 shots for the game, six of which were on goal.
Lindsay Pickering made two saves to post the shutout in goal. The Redhawks defense limited the Jaguars to six shots.
The Redhawks will make their home debut at 7 p.m. Friday, when they host St. Louis University at Houck Stadium.
