The Southeast Missouri State women's soccer team scored early in the second half to rally for a 1-1 tie with host Evansville Tuesday night.

Evansville (3-1-1) jumped on top with a goal about 11 minutes into the game as Kayla Lambert beat Southeast keeper Rachel Harrington.

Southeast (2-1-1) countered about four minutes into the second half as Alaina Lacopo scored her team-leading third goal of the season, all coming in the past two games. Megan McGrath and Courtney Alexander earned assists.

Neither squad scored in the two 10-minute overtime periods.

Southeast had a 13-12 edge in shots. Harrington played the first half in goal, while Lindsay Pickering was in the nets for the second half and both overtimes.

Harrington was credited with two saves and Pickering three.

Southeast returns to action Friday with a 7:30 p.m. game at regional power St. Louis University as part of the Toys for Tots tournament.

The Redhawks conclude the tournament Sunday with an 11 a.m. match against Air Force.

  • Earlier Tuesday, Lacopo was named the Ohio Valley Conference offensive player of the week for her performance against DePaul on Sunday.

Lacopo scored two goals in the Redhawks' 4-1 win.

Southeast women's basketball coach John Ishee has completed his coaching staff with the recent hiring of Marques Binion as the Redhawks' No. 3 assistant.

A 2004 graduate of Southeast, Binion served as a manager for the Redhawks' men's basketball team last season, when he was in charge of video coordination and helping with the squad's day-to-day operations.

In addition, he served as a volunteer to the women's team last season during its run to winning a second consecutive OVC championship and earning a second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

Binion, a native of Lilbourn, Mo., was previously the head boys basketball coach at Shawnee (Ill.) High School during the 2004-2005 season.

"Marques will be a great addition to our program for a lot of reasons," Ishee said in a release. "First and foremost, he's a quality person of the highest character. He's from the Southeast Missouri area, graduated from Southeast and is familiar with the university's athletic programs."

Ishee's other two assistants, Chris Harris and Angela Lewis-Moore, will also be in their first season with the program.

Football player sets record

Eddie Calvin's 100-yard interception return against Southwest Baptist on Saturday set a Southeast school record for longest interception return.

Calvin, a sophomore cornerback, tied the OVC record, which had been accomplished two other times.

In addition, Calvin became the 26th player in Division I-AA history to return an interception 100 yards for a score.
