The Southeast Missouri State soccer team has finally notched its first victory of the season.

Southeast held off host Alabama A&M 2-1 on Sunday in Huntsville, Ala.

The Redhawks improved to 1-6-2, while Alabama A&M fell to 2-7.

Southeast, which had scored just three goals in its first eight matches, found the net twice in Sunday's opening 17 minutes.

Lauren Lacopo and Nicole Bussman got the Redhawks' goals, with Bussman and Ashley Runion earning assists.

Alabama A&M scored with about 11 minutes left in the second half but could not net the tying goal.

Southeast held a 14-13 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Redhawks resume Ohio Valley Conference play Friday when Morehead State visits for a 7 p.m. start. Southeast will host Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Southeast is eighth among nine OVC squads with an 0-2-1 record. Morehead State (5-6-1, 2-0-1) is tied for second and Eastern Kentucky (3-7-2, 1-2) is seventh.

Runners fare well

The Southeast cross country teams both finished in the top half of their divisions at Saturday's Greater Louisville Classic.

Southeast's men, ranked 13th in the Midwest Region, placed 11th among 33 squads in the 8K Gold Division, while the Southeast women were 15th among 32 teams in the 5K Gold Division.

Brandon Karcher led the Southeast men by finishing 23rd with a time of 24 minutes, 37.01 seconds.

Also in the top 100 for the Redhawks were Nate Shipley (58th, 25:15.98), Dustin Davis (68th, 25:21.54) and Chris Loseman (96th, 25:39.38).

On the women's side, Southeast's Juli Koenegstein posted a season-best time of 18:19.67 to finish 35th.

Others in the top 100 for the Redhawks were Monica Noble (77th, 18:50.41), Linnea Woldtvedt (80th, 18:52.09) and Amy Warren (95th, 19:02.89).

Southeast's next action will be Oct. 17, when it will host the Redhawks Classic at 5 p.m. at the Jaycee Municipal Golf Course.
