Redhawks set two records at meet

The Southeast Missouri State men's track and field team set two school records over the weekend at the Hoosier Hills Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.

Southeast had numerous top-10 finishes in the large meet hosted by Indiana University, including two individual champions who broke the program records.

Senior Brandon Colbert bettered his own school mark in the weight throw for the third time this season with a distance of 63 feet, 4 3/4 inches. He originally set the record during the 2008 season.

Junior Josh Uchtman broke Jay Heddell's seven year old record in the shot put with a toss of 60-8, which surpassed his previous best by nearly three feet.

It was the fourth shot put title of the indoor season for Uchtman, who reached the NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Colbert added a fourth place in the shot with 55-5 and Uchtman placed fifth in the weight throw with 59-3 1/2.

Bilal Hameed was third in the triple jump with a season-best 46-8. Chris Johnson was fourth (45-4 1/4).

Tyler Terry placed fourth in the long jump (22-11 1/4).

Chris Gill led the way on the track, placing second in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 49.29 seconds. Ryan Criglar was eighth (22.33).

Rachel Kahle was the top placer for the women's team, finishing third in the 60 meters (7.75). She was also ninth in the 200 (25.33).

Jerika Lewis was fifth in the 400 (56.33) and seventh in the 200 (25.14).

Cara Harbstreet tied for fifth in the high jump (5-1)

Ashley Brewer was sixth in the weight throw (57-1/4) and seventh in the shot put (47-1 3/4).

Brianna Egbuka set new career bests in the shot put (46-10) and weight throw (55-5) to finish eighth in both events.

Kelley Good was ninth in the 800 (2:23.43) and Tyler Hodges placed ninth in the long jump (16-1).

Southeast will hold its only home meet of the season, the annual Redhawks Invitational, Friday at the Student Recreation Center.

Softball splits pair

The Southeast softball team went 1-1 Saturday at the weather-shortened Mardi Gras Classic in Monroe, La.

Southeast (2-1) beat Missouri-Kansas City 6-4 and lost to host Louisiana-Monroe 9-6.

The Redhawks originally were scheduled to play five games over three days before the event was affected by heavy snow and ice.

Whitney Dupuis pitched all seven innings against UMKC, allowing 10 hits. She struck out two and walked two.

Southeast had seven hits, led by Renee Kertz, Alex Ramirez and Nicole Troncoso with two each. Ramirez doubled and scored twice.

The Redhawks again had seven hits against Louisiana-Monroe, led by Troncoso and Carmen Fowler with two each.

Fowler got Southeast's first home run of the season and also doubled. She drove in three runs and scored twice. Freshman Brittaney Gonsoulin added two RBIs.

Stefanie Barnes was the losing hurler. She allowed 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) in five innings. She struck out three and walked five.

Southeast returns to action Friday at the Blues City Classic in Memphis, Tenn.
