Redhawks' Niemczyk named OVC newcomer of the week

Southeast Missouri State redshirt junior guard Nick Niemczyk has been named the Ohio Valley Conference newcomer of the week after averaging 20 points in a pair of home victories last week.

Niemczyk, a graduate of Bell City High School, also had 10 rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Niemczyk opened the week with a career-high 22 points on 8 of 14 shooting in an 82-72 win over Hannibal-LaGrange on Wednesday. He then scored 18 points and pulled down six rebounds in a 64-57 win against Miami of Ohio on Saturday. He scored 14 of his points in the second half to help the Redhawks overcome an eight-point deficit.

He shot 56 percent (14 of 25) from the field over the two games, including 41.7 percent (5 of 12) from 3-point range. He also made 7 of 8 free throws.
