Redhawks men take second place in indoor championship; women take third place

The Southeast Missouri State men's track and field team gave Eastern Illinois a run for its money.

But the perennial powerhouse Panthers proved too tough during the Ohio Valley Conference indoor championships held Friday and Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.

Southeast held a decent lead after Friday's events, but Eastern Illinois came back to capture the title with 178 points.

The Redhawks scored 150.5 points to finish in second place behind the Panthers for the second consecutive year.

"Our men gave it a good run," Southeast coach Eric Crumpecker said. "There are some areas we could have done better, but we competed the best we could."

Eastern Illinois made it a clean sweep by also winning the women's division with 142 points. Eastern Kentucky was second (128) and Southeast third (93).

"Our women are just short-handed right now," said Crumpecker, citing key injuries. "We'll be better outdoors."

Performances by senior thrower Brandon Colbert and junior jumper Tyler Terry highlighted the meet for Southeast's men.

Colbert won the male athlete of the meet award. He set an OVC record in the weight throw with a distance of 61 feet, 6 3/4 inches and was second in the shot put.

"That was big for Brandon. It was nice to get that one," Crumpecker said of the award.

Terry, a Central High School graduate, swept the long and triple jumps for the second straight season.

"Tyler had another really good meet," Crumpecker said.

Other event winners for Southeast's men were Josh Uchtman in the shot put and Jason Lumpkin in the 5,000 meters. Uchtman also was second in the weight throw.

Max Wieser, a sophomore from Saxony Lutheran, was sixth in the 800 and ran on the distance medley relay team that placed third.

Jared Siemers, a freshman from Central, was seventh in the weight throw.

On the women's side, Southeast's lone champion was freshman Jerika Lewis in the 400. She also was second in the 200 and ran on the 1,600 relay squad that was second.

"Jerica had a really good meet, especially for a freshman," Crumpecker said.

Senior Ashley Brewer placed second in both the shot put and weight throw, while senior Szandra Pal was third in both the 3,000 and 5,000.

Central graduate Brianna Egbuka, a junior, finished third in both the shot put and weight throw.

Jackson graduate Rachel Kahle was third in the 55, fourth in the 200 and eighth in the long jump. The junior also ran on the 1,600 relay that was second.

Sophomore Tiffany Mead, a Central graduate, competed on the distance medley relay that placed fourth.
