Redhawks drop series to Murray St.

Murray State belted four home runs and rolled past visiting Southeast Missouri State 9-4 on Sunday to win the Ohio Valley Conference softball series.

The squads had split Saturday's doubleheader, MSU taking the opener 9-1 in five innings and Southeast claiming the nightcap 9-6.

Southeast fell to 14-24 overall and 5-12 in OVC play to remain last in the 10-team league.

First-year program MSU (15-24, 7-9) is in fifth place. The top six finishers qualify for the conference tournament.

Stephanie Mattocks hit a grand slam in the first inning off Stefanie Barnes to give the Racers a quick 4-0 lead, which became 7-1 after three innings.

Southeast had five hits compared to 10 for MSU. Nicole Troncoso led the Redhawks with two hits and two RBIs.

The Redhawks are back in action Thursday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at future OVC member SIU-Edwardsville.

Track nabs six titles

Southeast track and field teams recorded six titles at Saturday's Tiger Invitational in Memphis, Tenn.

On the women's side, titles were won by senior Ashley Brewer in the discus (159 feet, 2 inches), Jerika Lewis in the 400 meters (56.56 seconds) and the 1,600 relay of Rachel Kahle, Kelley Good, Tiffany Mead and Lewis (3:50.60).

Brewer was also second in the shot put (46-6) and javelin (112-6).

Kahle had a big meet. In addition to running on the relay, she was second in the 100 (12.13), 200 (24.00) and long jump (18-7).

Lewis was also third in the 200 (24.70), while Mead placed fifth in the 400 (58.48).

Brianna Egbuka had three top-five finishes. She was third in the shot put (44-4 3/4), third in the discus (142-7) and fifth in the hammer throw (151-1).

Samantha Espiricueta was third in the discus (142-7), while placing fourth were Szandra Pal in the 3,000 (10:53.40), Jill Schnurbusch in the high jump (4-11), Audrey Harwood in the pole vault (11-11) and Hannah Groom in the javelin (109-3).

Capturing titles for Southeast's men were Chris Gill in the 400 (47.83), Dustin Davis in the 1,500 (4:01.96) and the 400 relay of Ryan Criglar, Robert Delaria, Jamere Franklin and Tyler Terry (41.51).

Brandon Colbert was second in the shot put (54-3 3/4), third in the discus (173-4) and third in the hammer throw (194-7).

Terry was third in the long jump (22-5 3/4) and fifth in the triple jump (46-5 1/4).

Criglar was second in the long jump (22-7 1/4); Chris Johnson was third in the triple jump (46-8) and fourth in the long jump (22-4 1/4); Myron Pettigrew was third in the 400 (49.62) and fourth in the 200 (22.45); Delaria was fifth in the 200 (22.50) and fifth in the 400 (50.24); and Jamere Franklin placed fourth in the 100 (11.17).
