Southeast Missouri State came close in the opener and was routed in the nightcap during Wednesday's softball doubleheader at nationally ranked Southern Illinois.

SIU held on for a 2-1 victory before rolling 6-0.

The Salukis (13-1), ranked 18th and 23rd in the two major polls, have outscored their opponents 70-23.

Southeast (4-4) now has lost 14 straight meetings against the Salukis, who lead the all-time series 75-28-1.

Trailing 2-0 and being no-hit entering its final at-bat in the seventh inning of the opener, Southeast finally broke through.

Alex Ramirez led off with a single, and pinch-runner Sirena Watkins advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a double by Jennifer Vasquez. But Vasquez was stranded at second base to end the game.

Freshman Giana Zimmerman suffered her first loss of the season despite allowing just six hits and two third-inning runs.

Zimmerman (3-1) struck out seven and did not issue a walk.

Nikki Waters, despite losing her no-hit bid in the seventh inning, finished the complete game. She struck out seven and walked none.

The Redhawks had more hits in the nightcap than in the opener -- five -- despite being shut out.

Ramirez and Elise Sperakos both had two hits for the Redhawks.

Whitney Dupuis (1-3) took the loss, allowing six hits and all six runs in four innings.

Freshman Stefanie Barnes finished with two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit.

Southeast returns to action this weekend in the All Missouri Cancer Tournament in Springfield.

The Redhawks play Missouri State and Missouri-Kansas City on Friday, followed by games against Saint Louis and 12th-ranked Missouri on Saturday.
