The Southeast Missouri State men's and women's track and field teams enjoyed a successful first day at the Ohio Valley Conference meet Friday in Richmond, Ky. The Southeast Missouri State men's and women's track and field teams enjoyed a successful first day at the Ohio Valley Conference meet Friday in Richmond, Ky.

Both the men's and women's teams sit atop the standings after the first day.

The women's team got titles from senior Juli Koenegstein in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10 minutes, 45.45 seconds), junior Samantha Espiricueta in the javelin (144 feet, 11 inches) and junior Ashley Brewer in the shot put (50-07 1/4).

The Southeast women scored 67.5 points, while Eastern Illinois sits in second with 49.

The Southeast men scored 58 points, while Eastern Illinois finished with 48.

Senior Richard Martin won the javelin (168-5) and sophomore Josh Uchtman won the shot put (52-0 1/2). The Redhawks swept the top three spots in the shot put, as Martin took first, senior Andy Glass, a former Jackson standout, was second (51-11 1/4) and Martin was third (49-11 1/4).

Senior Brandon Karcher took second in the 10,000 (32:10.82), while freshman Josh Sutton was third in the high jump (6-6).

The meet wraps up today.
