Redhawks announce changes in staff

~ Southeast hired Mohnsen as defensive coordinator, shifted McGuire to offense

The Southeast Missouri State football coaching staff will feature two new coordinators, although only one is new to the program.

It was announced Tuesday that Brian Mohnsen will join the Redhawks as defensive coordinator while Tim McGuire moves to offensive coordinator.

McGuire, who spent the past five seasons as Southeast's defensive coordinator, has also been promoted to assistant head coach.

Southeast's staff shuffling came after former offensive coordinator and assistant head coach Vincent White recently left to become an assistant at the University of New Mexico.

Mohnsen most recently coached the defensive line and defensive ends at the University of Buffalo from 2006 to 2009.

Mohnsen, who like many of Southeast's coaches is a former player at Nebraska, spent 1992 through 2003 serving as director of the Cornhuskers' video scouting department. He also has been defensive coordinator at NAIA Northwest Oklahoma State, where that defense ranked among the national leaders.

"I was actually his position [defensive end/linebacker] coach for a while at Nebraska," said Southeast coach Tony Samuel, a former player and assistant for the Cornhuskers. "He's got a real good concept, a good understanding of what we want to do here."

McGuire directed Southeast's 2010 defensive unit that led the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring defense, allowing 21.5 points per game. The Redhawks also led the league in interceptions and turnover margin (plus 13) as they came up with 29 takeaways.

Samuel said he expects McGuire, who played offensive line for Nebraska and is a former head coach at Indiana State, to make a smooth transition with an offense that ranked among the national leaders in rushing in 2010.

"You see this a lot of times. [Coordinators] go to the other side because they've seen it from a different perspective," Samuel said. "I see it as a big plus. We won't change much."
