VIERA, Fla. -- Tony Batista homered and drove in two runs to lead the Montreal Expos past the St. Louis Cardinals 7-2 Sunday.
Five Expos pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts, led by four each from relievers Jeff Farnsworth and Pat Mahomes. Starter Claudio Vargas allowed one hit in three scoreless innings to earn the victory.
St. Louis starter Alan Benes pitched two scoreless innings, giving up three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
Batista went 2-for-2, and broke a scoreless tie in the third with a solo home run.
The Expos increased their lead in the fifth when Jose Vidro grounded into a fielder's choice that scored a run, and Batista added a sacrifice fly.
Albert Pujols got the Cardinals on the board when a he crushed a solo home run out of Space Coast Stadium in the top of the seventh.
Cardinals reliever Jimmy Journell struggled in the bottom of the seventh, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks.
