Red Devils rally late, fall short in double OT

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- In a wild season opener, Chaffee outscored East Prairie 11-0 in the fourth quarter to force overtime before eventually falling 68-56 in double overtime Tuesday night.

"It was pretty wild way to start," said Chaffee boys basketball coach David Mirly, who made his Red Devil debut. "It seemed like we were always digging out of a hole."

East Prairie led throughout the game, holding a 21-12 lead after one quarter, a 29-24 advantage at halftime and a 48-37 lead entering the final eight minutes.

East Prairie then went scoreless in the final period as Chaffee (0-1) managed to tie the score on a pair of Sam Burnett free throws with 30 seconds left in regulation. After East Prairie missed a wild shot at the buzzer, the teams played to a 4-4 stalemate in the first overtime. East Prairie then scored the first five points of the second overtime as it pulled away. East Prairie's Aaron Gifford scored half of his 16 points on the night in the second overtime on 8 of 9 free-throw shooting.

Matt Boyer led the Eagles with 23 points.

Chase Eskew scored 21 points for Chaffee while Burnett added 17.

SIKESTON 66, CAPE CENTRAL 57

SIKESTON, MO. -- THE CAPE CENTRAL TIGERS FADED LATE AS THEY WERE ELIMINATED FROM CONSOLATION PLAY IN THE SIKESTON TOURNAMENT.

CAPE CENTRAL (1-3), THE EIGHTH SEED, LED FOURTH-SEEDED SIKESTON 46-43 ENTERING THE FOURTH QUARTER BUT SAW THE BULLDOGS RALLY DOWN THE STRETCH.

JUSTIN FREEMAN HIT A 3-POINTER WITH ABOUT 2:30 LEFT IN THE GAME TO PUT SIKESTON AHEAD 57-56 AND JUST MOMENTS LATER CONNECTED ON ANOTHER AFTER A BULLDOG STEAL.

"I WAS REAL IMPRESSED WITH INTENSITY LEVEL WE HAD FOR THE BALLGAME," SAID CAPE CENTRAL COACH DEREK MCCORD. " OUR INEXPERIENCE SHOWED IN THE END. WE NEED TO LEARN TO FINISH IN GAMES LIKE THIS."

MATT CARDIN LED CAPE CENTRAL WITH 15 POINTS, RYAN DELPH NETTED 14 AND MITCH CRAFT TALLIED 12.

LONTAS MCCLINTON SCORED A GAME-HIGH 22 POINTS FOR SIKESTON.

IN OTHER TOURNAMENT ACTION, NO. 3 POPLAR BLUFF DEFEATED NO. 6 DONIPHAN IN THE FINAL FIRST-ROUND GAME 80-52. IN SEMIFINAL PLAY, TOP-SEEDED NEW MADRID DEFEATED NO. 5 BLYTHEVILLE 58-43. POPLAR BLUFF AND KENNETT WILL MEET IN THE OTHER SEMIFINAL ON THURSDAY.

DEXTER 70, NOTRE DAME 60

DEXTER, Mo. -- The Bobcats rode a decided edge at the charity stripe to victory over the Bulldogs.

Dexter was 16-of-17 from the free-throw line -- 8-of-8 in the fourth quarter -- while Notre Dame (2-2) got to the line only four times, converting three.

The game was closely contested throughout as Notre Dame trailed by only two at the half and only four at the end of the third period.

Scott Wittenborn led the Bulldogs with 20 points, while Cory Buessink and Travis Siebert contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Matt Christian paced Dexter with 19 points, including five three-pointers, followed by Chad Gill with 17 and Chris Carr with 15.

ST. VINCENT 69, SCOTT CITY 52

PERRYVILLE, MO. -- THE INDIANS FINALLY OPENED THEIR SEASON TUESDAY AND QUICKLY POUNCED ON SCOTT CITY, JUMPING OUT TO AN 18-4 LEAD EN ROUTE TO VICTORY.

COUSINS TYLER WENGERT AND MATT WENGERT LED THE WAY FOR ST. VINCENT (1-0) WITH 20 AND 19 POINTS, RESPECTIVELY.

TYLER WARD SCORED 14 POINTS FOR SCOTT CITY WHILE DAVID DEES ADDED 10.

THE INDIANS LED 18-7 AFTER THE FIRST QUARTER AND 36-28 AT HALFTIME. ST. VINCENT TOOK A 49-36 LEAD INTO THE FOURTH QUARTER.

PERRYVILLE, MO. -- PERRYVILLE POINT GUARD JON MIESNER SCORED A GAME-HIGH 23 POINTS AS THE PIRATES SOUNDLY DEFEATED FARMINGTON.

MIESNER SCORED 12 OF HIS TEAM'S FIRST 14 POINTS IN THE GAME AS PERRYVILLE (2-1) BROKE OUT TO A 16-11 LEAD.

"HE CAME OUT AND WAS ON FIRE," SAID PERRYVILLE COACH JEFF STEFFENS. MIESNER CONNECTED FOR FIVE OF HIS TEAM'S EIGHT 3-POINTERS AND WAS THE ONLY PIRATE TO FINISH IN DOUBLE-FIGURE SCORING.

THE PIRATES EXTENDED THE ADVANTAGE TO 33-21 BY HALFTIME AND 46-29 BY THE START OF THE FOURTH QUARTER.

WOODLAND 60, LEOPOLD 58

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- In a game with several momentum swings, Woodland barely won a rivalry game over its county rival Leopold.

Luke Johnson scored a game-high 24 points for the Cardinals (3-1) while his teammate Michael Owens poured in 22.

Kevin Holzum led Leopold with 16 points, followed by Scott VanGennip with 13.

Woodland led 31-30 at halftime and 45-43 going into the fourth quarter.

Oak Ridge 86, Delta 76

OAK RIDGE, Mo. -- Oak Ridge (2-3) avenged a 14-point loss suffered last week in the Woodland Tournament as it won its home opener.

Jeff Cowan led four Oak Ridge players in double figures with 21 points. Adam Hahs had 19, Alex Fadler scored 17 and Clayton Ruesler added 13.

Craig Bock and Lance Kinder provided a big one-two punch for Delta, scoring 27 and 25 points, respectively.

EAGLE RIDGE 48 NEW SALEM 38

MIKE PROBST SCORED 17 POINTS AND ANDREW MELLIES HAD 14 POINTS AND EIGHT BLOCKS AS EAGLE RIDGE IMPROVED TO 2-1.

JOEL POWELL ADDED 11 POINTS FOR EAGLE RIDGE.
