RED DEVILS CLAIM OWN TOURNEY TITLE

CHAFFEE -- The host Red Devils claimed their four-team tourney with two wins Saturday to improve their overall record to 5-3.

Chaffee beat Advance 6-0 in a preliminary game and then knocked off Dexter 11-10 in the championship game.

Jason Harrell had three hits in the finale, including a two-run double in the seventh inning that proved to be the winning runs. Trailing 11-6, Dexter scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh before Josh Hanlon came on to get the final out for the save.

Both teams had 12 hits. Tommy Stidham totaled three hits and was the winning pitcher, allowing only five earned runs. Jeremy Lynn added two hits for the Red Devils and Hanlon plated two on an RBI-double.

In the shutout victory over Advance, Matt Stroup pitched a two-hitter for the complete game. He struck out four and walked four.

Stidham had two of Chaffee's eight hits. Harrell rocked a two-run home run in the first to get the Red Devils going.

East Prairie won the third place game over Advance 9-2. In another preliminary game, Dexter beat East Prairie 13-3.

Chaffee hosts Portageville on Monday.

SOFTBALL

Chaffee Tournament

CHAFFEE -- The Lady Red Devils rallied in the final inning Saturday to remain unbeaten and win their own tournament.

With the score tied 10-10 in the seventh inning of the title game against Delta, Adria Meyr clubbed a two-out, bases-loaded hit to put Chaffee on top for good. The Lady Red Devils, who trailed 10-4 after five innings, wound up winning 15-11 to improve to 7-0.

"I'm so proud of the kids for coming back," said Chaffee coach Mark Davenport. "Delta had us down, but the kids showed a lot of character."

Five runs in the sixth inning and six more in the top of the seventh were enough to keep Chaffee on top. The Lady Devils out-hit Delta 17-9.

Jennifer Seibert had four hits, including a triple and three RBIs. Amy Burnett had three hits and won both games with complete games. Emily Seibert also had three hits, including a double and a two-run home run.

Jodi Pfefferkorn, Abby Seyer and Jill Little added two hits. Little had a two-run home run.

In the opening game, Chaffee belted 11 hits in a 10-3 win over Advance. Delta routed Dexter to get to the title game.

Amy Burnett had three hits and struck out 12 Advance batters. Seibert and Brandi Foulk had two hits, Foulk lacing a triple and home run for three RBIs.

Notre Dame 6-5

St. Pius 3-6

Notre Dame struck early to notch a victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday, but dropped the nightcap in extra innings.

Jill Huber limited St. Pius to five hits and one walk in the opener while striking out four. Notre Dame (2-4) scored two runs in each of the first three innings in building a 6-3 lead. The Lady Bulldogs banged out 10 hits, led by three hits by Erin Hamm and two by Ashley Koettker.

In the second game, Notre Dame scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings at 3-3. St. Pius then pushed across three runs in the eighth and Notre Dame saw a rally fall a run short in the bottom of the inning.

Randi Senciboy suffered the loss. She struck out six, walked two and allowed seven hits. Senciboy also had three of Notre Dame's eight hits, including a home run and a double.

SOCCER

Jackson 6, Francis Howell Central 1

JACKSON -- Despite allowing the first goal of the game, Jackson responded with six unanswered scores to win at home Saturday.

Julie Wunderlich scored three goals as the Lady Indians improved to 7-2. Jackson led 3-1 at halftime.

Jessica Shultz, Sarah Schlick and Dana Eakins added the other scores. Wunderlich, Schlick and Julianne Hall had assists.

Jackson's JV played a scoreless tie to make its record 5-0-1.

Monday's game at Carbondale (Ill.) was canceled so the Lady Indians will play next at Farmington on Tuesday.

TENNIS

Parkway West 7, Cape Central 2

Cape Central's tennis team could muster just two singles victories against Parkway West Saturday.

Drew Seib won a tie-breaker in No. 4 singles and Mick Metzger also won a tie-breaker in No. 6 play.

"Their No. 1 guy is ranked like No. 45 in the nation," said Cape Central coach Bud Craven. "They've got some good players."

Central fell to 6-3 on the season.

Riverbend Invitational

NEW MADRID -- Jackson's girls placed third and the boys fourth in the Riverbend Classic hosted by New Madrid on Friday.

Finishing first for the Lady Indians: Lindsey Meyr, long jump; Sarah Stiegemyer, 1500 meters; Jennifer Love, 300 hurdles; and the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams. On the 4x100 team were Megan Kuntze, Brandi Majka, Lindsey Walker and Meyr. Members of the winning 4x400 team were Holly Collier, Kuntze, Majka and Walker.

Individual winners for the Indians: Nathan Windeknecht, triple jump and Matt Hale, 200 meters.

Jackson's boys compete in Ste. Genevieve on Tuesday while the girls meet is Thursday.

8th, 9th-grade track

NEW MADRID -- Cape Central's ninth-grade boys captured a five-team meet at New Madrid Saturday, outdistancing the host by 28 points.

Cape Central finished with 143 points, followed by New Madrid 115, Poplar Bluff 98, Sikeston 66, and East Prairie 43

Central took first in four events: Gabe Austin won the 1,600 in 5:00 and the 800 in 2:21; Mark Stone took the 3,200 in 11:01; and Casey Dwyer won the pole vault with a 10-0 effort.

In 8th-grade competition, Central's boys finished fourth among seven teams with 66 points. Poplar Bluff finished first with 105.5 points.

Central's Jordan White placed first in the 400 in 57.0 seconds.

Walk-A-Thon set for May 16

The Miles for Meals Walk-A-Thon will be held in the Jackson City Park on Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Proceeds raised will remain at the Jackson Senior Center for enhancement of meals served at the facility and to support other programs at the center.

Volunteers for all ages are needed as walkers and sponsors for the event. Participation by the public, including schools, churches, community clubs and businesses is welcome.
