The crowd of 11,015 that witnessed Saturday night's football game at Houck Stadium not only set a Southeast Missouri State University all-time attendance record -- it shattered the old mark by more than 1,000.
Previously, the largest announced crowd to watch the Indians play at Houck Stadium was 10,000 during a 1979 contest against Murray State.
Since Houck officially only seats 10,000, that meant an overflow crowd saw the Indians rally from an early 28-0 deficit before eventually losing to Eastern Kentucky 37-28.
Southeast coach John Mumford acknowledged that many of the fans no doubt attended the Family Weekend contest to see a post-game concert by the legendary Beach Boys.
But Mumford hopes the Indians -- despite an 0-5 record and a 10-game losing streak dating back to last season -- made things entertaining enough for the fans to want to come back.
"It was a great crowd, a really electric atmosphere," Mumford said. "The Beach Boys aside, hopefully the fans will come back for homecoming."
The Indians face Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m. Saturday in Southeast's homecoming contest.
Southeast is 0-3 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Tennessee Tech improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the league by pasting Tennessee-Martin 45-9 Saturday.
