Maybe another week off would have done Kenny Rogers some good.
Rushed into the rotation when his suspension for shoving two cameramen was cut from 20 games to 13, Rogers gave up Manny Ramirez's home run in a five-run fourth inning Wednesday night, and the Boston Red Sox scored nine more in the eighth to beat the Texas Rangers 16-5.
Rogers (11-5) allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings, walking one and striking out five for his first loss since July 3. He was booed at every turn.
Rogers' ERA, which had been second-best in the AL at 2.77, rose to 2.99.
Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Jim Thome will have season-ending surgery on his right elbow next week.
The four-time All-Star was placed on the 15-day disabled list July 1, his second stint on the DL this season. He hit .207 with seven homers and 30 RBIs in 59 games this year.
Thome played for Clearwater on Tuesday as part of his minor league rehabilitation assignment. He went 4-for-9 with a home run in four games for the Class A team, but the Phillies announced Wednesday that the slugger will miss the rest of the season.
