~ The Red Devils thwarted a late two-point conversion and held on for a 21-19 victory.
CHAFFEE -- Streak over.
Adam Horton wasn't alive when it started, but he played a big role in ending it.
Horton and Dylan McAlister tripped up Scott City's Cody Carlyle short of the goal line on a 2-point attempt and Chaffee held on for the 21-19 victory Friday night. The victory ended the Rams' 21-game winning streak against the Red Devils.
"We never beat Scott City but once in baseball," Horton said. "It's the best feeling in the world. It's incredible."
Carlyle scored on a 1-yard run with 4 minutes, 2 seconds left in the game to pull the Rams within two points, 21-19. After a timeout, Scott City quarterback Caleb Estes handed off to Carlyle, who ran to his left. But McAlister and Horton caught him before he could break the goal line and tie the game.
"It always goes to Carlyle," Horton said. "It's hard to read because they do so much stuff, the quarterback switching over. But you've just got to follow your key people and read it and react. That's it."
Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery said he was fairly certain Carlyle would get the ball.
"You never know, but we suspected that," Vickery said. "He's a really good back, a powerful back, and he does a good job."
Scott City's fate was sealed when Josh Schuenemeyer fumbled on the first play after the Rams forced Chaffee to punt. The Red Devils took over with 2:09 left and ran out the clock.
"Some people out here have been waiting for it for 22 years," McAlister said. "I'm just glad we could get it done for them."
Scott City looked poised to take the lead when it marched down to Chaffee's 18-yard line about midway through the fourth quarter. But on fourth-and-5, the Red Devils put enormous pressure on Estes, who sailed a ball to his left. Chaffee's Andrew Hendrix read Estes' eyes and stepped in front of the pass for the interception at the 8-yard line.
Hendrix started down the sideline, using his blocking to race 92 yards for a touchdown.
"I caught it and kind of seen the backup coming," Hendrix said. "Jo Jo Myers made a hell of a block and I knew I was gone after that. I followed the sidelines, that's all I did."
Hendrix's touchdown pushed the score to 21-13 after he kicked his third extra point.
The Red Devils relied on their running game to gain yards against Scott City. They ran the ball 46 times for 217 yards, led by McAlister's 17 carries for 80 yards and a score.
"Our line was getting off blocks and we were just hitting the holes hard," he said.
McAlister was also part of Chaffee's first touchdown when the Red Devils went with a little trickery to find the end zone. Hendrix threw a lateral to Jerrod Steger, who lofted a pass to McAlister. The play went for 31 yards and Chaffee's first touchdown.
Carlyle led the Rams with 14 carries for 89 yards and two scores, including a 24-yarder on a fourth-and-3 play in the first quarter.
The loss dropped Scott City to 3-2 after it started 3-0.
"We have to do the same stuff we've been doing," Carlyle said. "We've got to practice harder, just get our focus back on the game."
