Scott City won 14-0, as Chaffee's lost its 29th consecutive game.
When you haven't won a game in nearly three years, good fortune is rare.
Chaffee -- losers of 28 straight heading into Friday night's homecoming matchup against rival Scott City at Chaffee -- must have been taken back to find itself at Scott City's 2-yard line less than two minutes into the game after a botched Scott City punt snap.
Unfortunately for the Red Devils, their fortune quickly turned sour. Chaffee (0-5) quarterback Michael Lee fumbled after being sacked by a host of Scott City linemen on second-and-goal from the 1.
Scott City did not score after the turnover, but the Rams had seized the momentum and squeezed out a 14-0 win to extend Chaffee's losing streak.
"If we could have just got that; it could have been a huge momentum shift," Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery said. "We just haven't caught the breaks."
Scott City's defense, which had not allowed less than 19 points in any of its first four games, held Chaffee to just 92 yards of offense. Scott City (2-3) forced five turnovers, including two interceptions in the fourth quarter by Blake Dirnberger.
"We've been waiting for our defense to step up and make a play," Scott City coach Terry Flannigan said. "We were finally against someone with the same speed we have. I think playing who we've played the first four games got us a step up on that."
Scott City sophomore quarterback Ethan Watkins, making his second start, completed 11-of-14 passes, including two touchdowns. Watkins' first touchdown pass, a 32-yard play to fellow sophomore Chris Blankenship early in the second quarter, was set up by some deft scrambling by Watkins.
Flannigan said Watkins made some good adjustments as the game went along.
"He made a couple of really good plays," Flannigan said.
Chaffee trailed just 6-0 at the half after an inspired effort from its defense. The Red Devils continued to play solid on defense, keeping Scott City off the scoreboard throughout the third quarter.
Scott City's defense bailed out its offense early in the fourth quarter, holding Chaffee after the Red Devils recovered a fumble on their own 9. After a Chaffee punt, Scott City got the ball at the Chaffee 25.
Following a holding penalty, Watkins hit Derek Goodin for a 33-yard score. Jamie Pinkston found Dirnberger in the end zone for a two-point conversion and a 14-0 lead.
"We shot ourselves, I don't know how many times, in the foot," Flannigan said. "Most of the time our offense has stepped up. This time our defense stepped up. I was happy for the defense; they needed to get some success."
Cody Carlyle led Scott City with 100 yards rushing on 23 carries.
Kent Courtney led Chaffee with 30 yards rushing on 14 carries. Lee completed 4-of-12 passes for 41 yards.
"Our kids played hard," Vickery said. "We're doing what we can do; we just need to keep getting better."
