It was shaping up to be a big weekend for local sporting events.

Thanks a lot, Mother Nature.

Rain wiped out three high school sports tournaments scheduled for Friday and today, and the threat of more rain today and Sunday could put a damper on the rest of the weekend's outdoor plans.

The Red Devil Classic, an eight-team baseball tournament in Chaffee, Mo., and the accompanying Lady Devils Softball Classic, another eight-team tournament, both were postponed until next weekend after rain began early Friday. Also cancelled was the two-day Noon Optimist Spring Spring Classic, a girls soccer tournament featuring seven teams from the region. It will not be rescheduled.

One of the few exceptions to Friday's rained-out events was Central's home baseball game, which Festus won 3-0.

A variety of events are scheduled today, including the Cape Relays track and field meet, a Southeast baseball doubleheader and auto racing at a pair of area dirt racetracks.
