Congratulations to the Jackson boys varsity and junior varsity basketball teams for an outstanding season this past year.

We want to thank all of you for your prayers, support and encouragement you have given us. We also want to thank you for wearing No. 31 wristbands to honor Jason and for dedicating the season to him.

Even though we lost the district championship to Poplar Bluff at Poplar Bluff with a score of 66-35, the 31-point loss is a special number to us.

You all showed respect, maturity, dedication and good sportsmanship on the court, and we are very proud of you.

Qualified to criticize

I am a golfer, not a very good one, but I enjoy it and read all I can about it, which in your paper doesn't take long, as your coverage of golf is very skimpy.

But I was reading the scores on a tournament, and it listed all those who made the cut -- qualified is the word they used -- but there were four or five names listed as "qualified but did not advance." I've been reading golf stuff for years but I don't believe I have ever seen this before. I always thought the ones who made the cut went on to play the rest of the tournament. Can you tell me what this "qualified but didn't advance" means?

I'm hoping some day you will devote more space to golf. You sure give NASCAR lots of press, and they have a large following, but I always figured most people go to the races to see a bad wreck.

Maybe you could give the space to golf that you used to give to hockey. I agree with the 82 percent who answered "no" to the poll question if they cared the NHL games were canceled.

Advance

Due to the size of the field at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in mid-February, 12 players who met the qualifications to make the cut by posting a score of 3-under-par 213 through three rounds did not play the final round. Each earned a check for $10,547.
