Area high school track and field teams will begin the push toward state today when district meets are contested.

Cape Girardeau Central and Jackson will both take part in the Class 4A, District 1 Meet in Poplar Bluff while Kelly will host the Class 2A, District 1 Meet. Both of those competitions will begin at 11 a.m.

Competing along with Cape Central and Jackson in Poplar Bluff will be DeSoto, Farmington, Fox, Hillsboro, Mehlville, Northwest, Oakville and Sikeston and Poplar Bluff.

Joining Kelly in its meet will be Chaffee, Scott City, Caruthersville, Bourbon, Crystal City, Grandview, Portageville, East Prairie, Steelville and Viburnum.

Also today, Oran will compete in the Class 1A, District 1 Meet at the Missouri School for the Deaf while Perryville, Fredericktown and Charleston will all take part in the Class 3A, District 1 Meet in Herculaneum.

The top four finishers in each event during the 3A and 4A districts qualify for next Saturday's sectional meets while the top two finishers in each event during the 1A and 2A districts move directly on to next weekend's state meet in Jefferson City.
