PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: DEVILS END SKID, HORNETS SHOCK REBELS

OAK RIDGE -- Chaffee High's boys basketball team built 13-point lead, saw it dwindle to one, and then held on for a big 61-56 road triumph over Oak Ridge Friday night, snapping the Red Devils' nine-game losing skid.

Four Red Devils broke into double figures, led by 12 points from both Joe Hendrix and sophomore Jamie Gordon, as Chaffee improved to 2-10 overall and 1-2 in the Scott-Mississippi Conference.

Jim Cliff, who finished with 11 for Chaffee, had 10 first-half points as the Red Devils took a 29-21 lead by halftime.

Chaffee extended the lead to 12 by the start of the fourth quarter and led by 13 with just over four minutes left before Oak Ridge, behind guard Steve Masterson's 10 final-period points, rallied to within a point.

But Craig Pennington made a key steal and bucket to get the lead back to three and Oak Ridge (3-9 overall, 0-4 in conference) never got closer as Chaffee hit its free throws to seal the win.

The Red Devils, who also got 10 from Danny Eagan, were 10-of-13 from the charity stripe in the fourth period.

Masterson's 15 points led Oak Ridge, which now has lost seven in a row.

"It was a good effort by us," said Chaffee coach Kent Mangels. "I knew when we started playing teams we could match up with we'd do better.

"We about gave the darn thing away. But we hit our free throws late and got a big steal and bucket from Pennington. That turned things back around."

Said Oak Ridge coach John Crabtree, "You have to give Chaffee credit. They played well and really controlled the game."
